Melbourne Victory’s new signing Mitch Austin was a standout performer during the side’s 1-1 draw and subsequent penalty shootout victory against Italian giants Juventus.

The 25-year-old’s powerful and direct running down the left flank was complimented by his fine passing range.

Many Victory fans were disappointed with the departure of influential playmaker Kosta Barbarouses moving home to play for Wellington Phoenix.

However, Austin showed in his first outing for the club he’s capable of filling the void after he received the Man of the Match.

“I thought I did well, although I’m certainly still getting fit and I was surprised to last out the full game,” Austin said.

“I don’t normally get Man of the Match awards, probably even a first in my career so it’s a good start and hopefully I can continue it now.”

His interplay with Victory’s talisman Besart Berisha was encouraging and the former Central Coast Mariner is confident they can build a strong partnership.

“He’s always letting me know where he is in the box, which we practice at training and I think once the season starts the partnership will be solid,” he said.

The attacker’s key focus for the upcoming A-League campaign is to improve on his goal tally from last season.

“I want to beat my goal and assist tally from last season I’ll be satisfied,” Austin said.
