It’s safe to say it was not the greatest start to the season for Socceroos and Valencia shot-stopper Mat Ryan, conceding four goals to Las Palmas.

Starting in goal for the home team, Ryan and his teammates had a night to forget at the Mestalla, punished on the break by the tiny island club.

After a disappointing 12th place finish last season, this result will only heighten the sense of anxiety among Valencia fans as to whether they can return to the Spanish ‘Big Four’ with Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.

The performance is a little worrying for Socceroos fans, with Ryan as the first-choice keeper enduring a difficult start to his Valencia career in the past 12 months.

Trusted by manager Pako Ayestarán with the number one spot in goals after captaining the club in pre-season, let’s hope Ryan makes amends when Valencia take on Elbar away next week.

Competing for the first-choice Socceroos spot ahead of the upcoming World Cup Qualifiers is Stuggart’s Mitch Langerak, who has been solid in pre-season and kept a clean-sheet in yesterday’s 3-0 German Cup win over FC 08 Homburg.
