Futsal Outdoor 5s brand new venue in St Kilda East, Melbourne run by Local Sports Group is thriving!
Lads FC, one of the strongest teams in division 1, took on Bills 5s and kept their undefeated record intact with a hard-fought 5-3 victory.
The side’s lynchpin at the back, Sam Nottle took some time out after the game to explain why he’s been so impressed with the state-of-the-art venue under lights.
“The pitch is absolutely amazing – easily the best synthetic pitch I’ve played on and the feeling of being under lights is awesome. Only thing is you have to have moulded studs for it but I think that’s even better than playing indoor shoes anyway,” Nottle said.
“Rather than a normal indoor court I find that it’s far better for impact and less stressful on your back in particular. Indoor can be tough on the joints, but with this surface it’s much better.”
Another thing that appeals to players at East St Kilda is the extra space that you are afforded.
Outdoor 5s is a unique take from the game of futsal and is becoming a hugely popular alternative. All the same rules as indoor apply and the international sized pitch creates more space for you to create scoring opportunities, which Nottle loves.
“It’s a major plus to have more space to operate in, which leads to more creativity and time on the ball,” he said.
“I’ve also found that their aren’t as many goals and that actually adds to it because it means you’re more inclined to play ‘futsal’ rather than the hit and hope type of game.”
As for the imperious Lads FC outfit, they appear to be soaking up the easy going and social atmosphere of the venue, but who’s the joker in their side?
“Frenchy’s the clown in our team, for sure,” Nottle said.
“He reckons he’s pretty good with girls and tries to put on a show for them when they come down to watch. Don’t know what that’s got to do with Outdoor 5s but he lightens it up and adds to the social element of competition!”
“And it’s worth giving Joshie Cadder a mention – the heart of soul.”
Futsal Outdoor 5s accepts all ages and all walks of life, and no matter what skill level, there will be a grade for you. There are competitions for men, women and mixed and we award prizes for a variety of different achievements.
