Newcastle Jets manager Scott Miller believes his side can learn from their heavy 4-0 loss to Melbourne City at home on Sunday.

The defeat was Newcastle’s fourth and heaviest loss of the season but there were plenty of positives for the Jets to take out of the game according to Miller.

“[The result] Demonstrates their ability to break teams down. They’ve scored 10 goals in two weeks and unfortuantely for us they continued for goalscoring freedom,” Miller said.

It’s hard to take because we pride ourselves on solid defending. But we’ll learn from this that’s the biggest advantage of such a big defeat.”

Despite the loss, the former Fulham coach was full of praise of his side’s performance.

“They worked right until the end. Obviously the key pass and the chance creation was not there at the end but I can’t fault their commitment. They’re an outstanding group of people and today’s one was a hard one to take for everybody,” Miller said.

The likes of Aaron Mooy, Bruno Fornaroli and Harry Novillo terrorised the Newcastle defence with Novillo being the only one of the trio not to play a hand in a goal but Miller is adamant captain Nigel Boogaard will return to fill those holes next week against Adelaide United.

“He’s an integral part of the group. He would have the mentality to clear the ball, find a pass forward, squeeze the line, compress the space in front and brave enough to hold that line. These are the decisions of a leader and he will give us that when he gets back.”
