Sydney FC laboured in a home loss to Perth, as Keogh pounced on Janjetovic’s howler.

David Carney, a player with more international caps than he has appearances for any one club – except for Sydney FC – rejoined the Sky Blues a few weeks ago, and with him in the starting line up, Sydney welcomed the Glory to Allianz Stadium. Perth were riding the foaming crest of a fine-looking wave, a run of three straight league victories; they were, no doubt, looking to make it four on the trot, for just the second time in their history. In front of an extremely patchy crowd, the two teams flogged out a stuttering first stanza, where stout midfield tackling ruled, and coherent attacking was rarely seen.

Then, just as the match was freeing itself from its own, self-imposed shackles, a gift from Sydney FC keeper Vedran Janjetovic gave Andy Keogh the easiest goal he’s ever scored. Hoping to collect a routine, albeit dipping, cross, the Sydney goalkeeper allowed the ball to slip through his legs, and totter into the path of Keogh, two yards out. A horrid mistake, simply punished, and Sydney were rattled. The error did, however, wake the match from its slumber and, as is often the case following the opening goal, vibrancy burst forth.

Sydney threatened through a series of corners, and Alex Brosque might have profited had Perth’s offside trap not been quite so precise. Milos Ninkovic also saw a curling shot blocked desperately, after Perth allowed Blackwood to surge straight through their midfield. But poor technique abounded, rubbishing multiple situations of promise, as leaden-footed, blooting crosses were flung in by both teams. Finally, Blackwood trained a header, the last touch of the first half, hopelessly wide from a Carney free kick.

Ali Abbas came on in the second half to try and inject some energy into Sydney’s attack. It was Perth, however, who had the better chances to begin the second half, with Keogh twice guilty of scuppering guilt-edged opportunities. David Carney slid within centimetres of an equaliser, as his influence grew following his change of flanks. Then, just as it looked like Perth wouldn’t be able to take complete control of this match, a fast break saw Gyorgy Sandor shoot powerfully at Janjetovic. The Sydney keeper managed to repel the ball this time, only for Christ Harold to trundle in the rebound.

The second goal prompted the insertion of Shane Smeltz, and it didn’t take long for him to make an impact. Smeltz, 15 minutes or so after coming on, was released by a diagonal ball inside the Perth box, and shot accurately past Ante Covic. But it wasn’t enough, and boos rang out as it finished 2-1. Watching all of this, the folks on Twitter had plenty to say.
