The first half saw Adelaide fail to turn their dominant possession into clear-cut scoring opportunities.
On the other hand, City were clinical going ahead on eight minutes through an Erik Paartalu near-post header from an Aaron Mooy corner.
The visitors’ playmaker then doubled his side’s advantage in the 35th minute with a rasping strike that flew past a despairing John Hall.
After the break Adelaide threatened and almost found an instant equaliser, but it wasn’t to be and at the other end City appeared to have wrapped up the points through a splendid finish from Bruno Fornaroli.
To the home side’s credit they continued to probe and got their just rewards when Sergio Cirio curled in a a fine effort to make it 3-1.
It was game over on 71 minutes when Fornaroli sprung the offside trap to perfection, rounded Hall and tapped into an unguarded net.
The Reds scored a late consolation penalty through Pablo Sanchez when Paartalu was adjudged to have taken down youngster Bruce Kamau in the box illegally.

So when does Adelaide’s first win happen? Maybe Perth next month or WSW on New Year’s Day. #aleague #ADLvMCY

That Fornaroli though. Easily the best import in the league right now. Sensational. #ADLvMCY — Lucy Zelic (@LucyZelic) November 5, 2015
Novillo comes on. 15secs later, assists Fornaroli. #ADLvMCY

Novillo/Fornaroli combo looking pretty deadly. Add a touch of Mooy and City may be onto something. #ADLvMCY — Kazonaki (@kazonis) November 5, 2015
Novillos in form at start of year in friendly against Man City. Could tell he was going to be special. Great performance tonight. #ADLvMCY

I don’t think the Adelaide players deserve to be booed tonight #ADLvMCY — Mitchell Clark (@Mitchclark18) November 5, 2015
Other teams will punish City if they switch off defensively, as we saw last week. #ADLvMCY

This can’t be healthy for Adelaide. Not acknowledging the coach at all. #ADLvMCY https://t.co/RnHczW925h

This game doing plenty to show why Adelaide or City won’t be winning silverware this year #ADLvMCY — Bill Molloy (@Bill_Molloy94) November 5, 2015
Why is Jack Clisby such a terrible defender? JvS what are you doing letting him on the field. #ADLvMCY — Beau Tran (@beautran) November 5, 2015
Somewhere in New York right now. #ADLvMCY pic.twitter.com/PtQGTff5OC — Neil Sherwin (@neilsherwin) November 5, 2015
