Newcastle goalkeeper Rob Elliot produced a string of memorable saves to deny Bournemouth a route to goal as the Magpies stole all three points at Goldsands Stadium on Saturday.

Separated by only one point, both sides knew that this was a must-win game in the quest for Premier League survival.

The first real chance fell to Joshua King, who from a tight angle lashed the ball toward goal, only to be denied by the 29-year-old custodian.

King was again denied moments later after an over-hit pass from Vurnon Anita was miscontrolled by Chancel Mbemba. The Striker thought he was through on goal, but Elliot was quick to react as his challenge spared the blushes of the Newcastle defenders.

Pressure continued to mount on the Newcastle defence, as Elliot made it a hat-trick of saves, denying King yet again after his impressive run toward the net.

Newcastle managed their first and only attempt of the match 27 minutes in, when Aleksandar Mitrovic’s flick found Georginio Wijnaldum, who played through Ayoze Perez. The Spaniard drove his shot through Adam Federici to snatch the lead for the away side.

At the other end, Elliot continued his heroic display, thwarting King’s fourth attempt on goal following a set piece and then keeping out Dan Gosling.

Bournemouth would go on enjoy 70% of possession, but the Geordies and their custodian proved once again that possession is only 9/10ths of the law.

Cherries manger Eddie Howe was left crestfallen at the final whistle, his team failing to capitalise on their 20 shots on goal.

He denied Bournemouth on five occasions and was instrumental in Newcastle’s win. For that, Rob Elliot is our EPL Hero of the Week.
