Guillermo Amor: We deserved to win final

Adelaide United boss Guillermo Amor said that his team “deserved to win” the 2015-16 A-League Championship against Western Sydney Wanderers, following an emphatic 3-1 victory.

The Spanish tactician steered the club to a historic double and maiden grand final triumph after two previous fruitless attempts in front of an electric Adelaide Oval atmosphere.

Bruce Kamau’s close range finish, a sensational Isaias free kick and a stoppage time goal from super sub Pablo Sanchez ensured the Reds would finally lift the title that had eluded them.

After the match Amor could not hide his excitement after winning the title, something which his predecessor in Josep Gombau was unable to achieve.

“It’s a special day, for me it’s different when you are player and [now a coach],” Amor told the awaiting media in the post-match press conference.

“For me it’s a very good moment, I’m very happy for this team it’s a great group, special players.

“The staff, the coaches our group, the people that work with us every day, the supporters.

“We played very well, we had the control in the first-half after the first-half we nearly made it 3-0.

“But they [the Wanderers] made it 2-1, this moment, they pressed they recovered control.”

Amor also refuted claims from Tony Popovic that his side did not win beautifully and played a lot of long balls during the encounter.

“We know Western Sydney is a strong team … I think after analysing the game we deserved to win this game.”

It completes a remarkable turnaround for Adelaide who were bottom of the table and winless after eight rounds, before setting a club record 14-match undefeated streak to be considered genuine title contenders.

They also secured the Premier’s Plate on the final day of the regular season, after Brisbane Roar failed to beat Melbourne Victory.
