Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres says he feels “betrayed” by former club Liverpool following his big money move to Chelsea in 2011.

Torres believes he was made to look like a “traitor” by his former employers as he made the move for £50 million pounds, a British transfer record at the time.

The 32-year-old revealed the story behind the events in a new book written by Simon Hughes titled: “Ring of Fire: Liverpool FC into the 21st Century – the player’s stories”.

“It was presented as if I was a traitor,” Torres said.

“It was not like this in the discussion(s).”

“Liverpool could not admit they were doing something wrong with the whole team. They had to find a guilty one.”

The former Spanish international admits he spoke with managing director Christian Purslow, as he wanted to know if he would be sold to help improve the financial situation at the club.

He was told players were required to stay put to keep the value of the club at a premium ahead of a possible ownership change.

Torres who struggled to find his best form for Chelsea was told by director of football Damien Comolli that the new owners wanted to bring in younger players and admitted he didn’t have time to wait for the plan to work as he was 27 at the time.

Torres believes a leak from inside the club “changed the view of everybody, including myself”, once it became public the Spaniard could be leaving the club.
