It’s been a tough year for the Turkish delight. Can the captain put it behind him to lead his country’s charge?

Role in the team

Tactically speaking, Turan will most likely line up on the wing or in the hole, where he will be let off the leash, so to speak. If he starts on the wing, look for him to attack the opposition full-back at every opportunity, or drift inside when he does not have the ball to cause confusion in the defence.

However, Turan’s role in the team extends far beyond his position on the pitch. He is one of the most talented Turkish players of the last 15 years, the country’s star man, fan favourite, el capitano and his side’s most creative player, all rolled into one. It is his job to lead from the front and inspire his team mates. If he is in form, it will be a tough ask for any defence to stop him.

Recent Form

It could either be a blessing or a curse Turan only played 18 games this season. Making an off-season move from Atletico Madrid to Barcelona seemed like a good one at the time, but as so many have discovered in Catalonia, it is hard to break into the star-studded first team. What did not help matters was the transfer ban imposed on Barca for six months, meaning he was not allowed to take the pitch.

While the lack of game time could have an adverse effect on his match fitness, it could also have proved to keep him fresh, fully prepared to lead his country into battle in France. There is a chance the frustration over his lack of game time at the Nou Camp may have damaged his confidence, but it may potentially provide extra motivation to star for his country.

Conclusion

There is no doubt Turan would have hoped his first season in Barcelona had gone better, but he will be keen to put it behind him at the Euros and his country need him to have his eyes on the prize. At his best, he is one of the most devastating wingers in the world, so if he can prove he is still the player he was at Atletico Madrid, expect Turkey to reach the knockout stage.
