The Three Lions looked poised for a vital three points after a sublime Eric Dier free-kick, only for Russia to find a 92nd minute winner through Vasili Berezutski.

Here’s an overview of how each player fared on the night:

England

Joe Hart: 7

Did not have to make a save of note in the first-half with the Russians only having one shot on target. Sparked a little more into action in the second stanza, forced to make a save over the bar from a set-piece midway through.

Kyle Walker: 8

Good relationship with Lallana down the right and was tremendous for the entire 90. Great start by the Spurs flyer.

Gary Cahill: 6.5

Solid without being spectacular. Directed traffic well with Smalling at the back.

Chris Smalling: 7

Started promisingly in defence and with an early headed chance at goal that was straight at Akinfeev. Relatively calm with the big Dzyuba causing some problems, but a good start for Smalling in Euro 2016.

Danny Rose: 7.5

Marauding down the left side with some excellent delivery into the box and linked well with club teammate Dele Ali. Flashed a shot wide late in the first-half but was consistently energetic on the left. Trampled upon by Vasil Berezutski for Russia’s late equaliser.

Eric Dier: 8.5

Who knew he could take set-pieces! What a well-worked routine by England to open the scoring with a pearler of a strike. Almost scored another own-goal during the match but no one will remember that.

Dele Alli: 7

Interchanged and rotated with Rooney in his dangerous advanced midfield position. Very tricky with his feet and kick-started some excellent attacking thrusts.

Wayne Rooney: 7.5

Started the match with a point to prove, his energy and passing range at an absolute maximum. Most passes of anyone in the first-half (32) at a 92% completion rate. Tired in the second-half but still an excellent performance. Replaced by Jack Wilshere in the 76th minute.

Raheem Sterling: 6

Found space early on and was energetic throughout his time on the pitch, but lacked a cutting edge and sense of calmness with the ball. Lots of poor decisions.

Harry Kane: 5.5

On corner duty which was quite strange and was quiet early apart from an offside-ruled goal. Some of his corner deliveries were awful and counted for six of just 16 touches in the first half. Better in the second half, drawing fouls and standing up against the physical Russian backline, but nonetheless an average performance from the star.

Adam Lallana: 7

Early shot saved and then sprayed another wide in a frenetic opening from the Liverpool midfielder. Very sharp start but quieter in the second half. Encouraging performance nonetheless.

Substitutions:

Jack Wilshere: N/A

Came on to shore up the win late in the match for Rooney.

James Milner: N/A

Replaced Sterling late to pack the midfield.

Russia

Igor Akinfeev: 7

Copped the wrath of English attacking onslaughts and made some notable saves from half chances. Made a spectacular save to deny Rooney in the 70th minute. Could do nothing about the free-kick.

Igor Smolnikov: 5.5

Too was nervy at right-back but made a goal saving tackle denying Raheem Sterling in the 23rd minute.

Vasili Berezutski: 7

Made some outstanding defensive headers and was resolute alongside Ignashevich after the ferocious first half. Rose well to head the ball down for Denis Glushakov’s late equaliser.

Sergei Ignashevich: 6.5

Forced to make several crucial challenges potentially saving goals but struggled to organise his defence which was bombarded by England.

Georgi Schennikov: 5

Contained Raheem Sterling well at left-back, rushing and forcing the Manchester City winger into making decisions he was not very good at. However, gave away the free-kick in the 73rd minute which led to the Erik Dier opener.

Roman Neustadter: 5

Struggled to contain the likes of Alli and Rooney in midfield and was replaced late in the match. Replaced late in the match.

Aleksandr Golovin: 5

Quiet first half but found more possession like the rest of his teammates after the break. Replaced by Roman Shirokov.

Oleg Shatov: 5

Lack of urgency as the further advanced of the midfield trio. Poor performance between the boxes.

Fedor Smolov: 6

Closed down well at times and has pace to burn. Almost opened the scoring just past the hour mark with a curling effort just wide of the goal.

Artem Dzyuba: 6

Physical size always a worry for the England defenders. Dzyuba is a very imposing character on the pitch

Aleksandr Kokorin: 5.5

Posed plenty of problems particularly after the break but ultimately lacked consistency across the whole game.

Substitutions

Roman Shirokov : N/A

Replaced Aleksandr Golovin with just over 10 minutes to play.

Denis Glushakov: 7

Scored an unlikely late equaliser after some terrific physical work by Berezutski.

Fedor Smolov: N/A

Came on for Roman Neustadter late.
