Carroll is a square peg in the round hole at the moment

This might be a little harsh on Carroll after only his second Premier League start this season, but for a forward that has the potential to be one of the most devastating in the league, Carroll has looked out of place the past two weeks.

The comical error against Watford that led to the opening goal last week was compounded by a lacklustre performance this week.

It could be argued that the service wasn’t there for Carroll last night, however on the occasions that Dimitri Payet and Manuel Lanzini did venture inside Carroll failed to present himself as an option enough, and when he did either lost the ball or stifled the play with his lumpen presence.

Carroll also didn’t look like his usual imposing figure in the box as West Ham became reliant on him while the game was in the balance during its closing stages.

He will likely get more chances after the international break, but better performances will have to follow and he will have to prove he can work within Bilic’s system.
