Methodical Potters claim another win over Mourinho

Not even the most die-hard of Potters supporters could claim that the hosts would describe the football played by the hosts as attractive, but patience on the field proved to be the decisive factor in this match. Largely letting Chelsea control the possession in the midfield line and leading up to the box, supreme marking and a few vital touches shutdown the majority of the opposition’s attacks before a dangerous position could be reached. Stoke were then able to capitalise on another defensive lapse in concentration by Chelsea, with Arnautovic given enough space to slot away an impressive mid-air volley.

After knocking them out of the League Cup, Mark Hughes can also claim a Premier League victory over the Blues in the space of 14 days, a feat that will renew confidence in the players and keep the hopes of a finish in the upper-echelons of the table alive.

Blues will wonder what else they can do

Chelsea’s evening, just a step or two off from putting three or four goals away, was typified when a picturesque curling strike from Pedro beat Jack Butland only to be denied by the post in the second-half. Recent outings have seen the players and the showings on the field slightly improve, yet heads will be scratched on the way back to Stamford Bridge after this display where the Blues dominated possession and the overall attacking momentum. Willian’s work rate was once again immeasurable and the connections with Pedro saw numerous deliveries into the box, which could not be finished off by Diego Costa.

With a seventh loss in the opening 12 games of the 2015-16 season, all Mourninho and his players can do is hope that a continued confidence in their football will lead to improved results soon.
