Sunderland

Jordan Pickford: 8 – Played fantastically for a young keeper making his debut. Not much he could have done to keep the four goals out.

Billy Jones: 6 – The Sunderland defenders initially did well to keep Tottenham out, but this eventually fell apart.

Patrick Van Aanholt: 7.5 – Scored Sunderland’s opening and only goal. Well-taken.

John O’Shea: 6 – Provided strong tackles when necessary.

Wes Brown: 6 – Again worked quietly at the back, but the team fell apart when the shape was changed.

Adam Johnson: 6 – Provided the lovely pass that allowed Van Aanholt to score his goal.

Jeremain Lens: 6.5 – Played well, was subbed for Duncan Watmore.

Lee Catermole: 5.5 – Mostly only played one half, and did poorly to keep out Eriksen’s goal. Was take off by Allardyce in the 53rd minute to protect his side from going down to 10 men after his yellow card.

Yann M’Villa: 6.5 – One of the better performers for Sunderland today.

Subs

Jack Rodwell: 5 – Was relatively quiet after coming on, didn’t do much except for being ruled offside and striking the ball wide anyway.

Jan Kirchoff: 4 – Worst player on the pitch. A debut he will definitely want to forget.

Duncan Watmore: 5 – Wasn’t on the pitch for very long.
