“FOOOUUURRRR!”

Commentator Jon Champion is left almost speechless, such was the brilliance of this Premier League classic and Arsenal’s stunning fourth against title-chasing Liverpool. Most of the excitement generated from the unforgettable 4-4 draw at Anfield in May 2009 was thanks to one man, from Russia with love: Andrey Arshavin.

With the Reds still in the race for the 2008-09 title, they desperately needed a win in this match to keep pace with Manchester United and Chelsea. However, Anfield was left stunned when the former Zenit St Petersburg star opened the scoring for the Gunners at the Kop End in the 36th minute. Little did they know what they were in for after the interval.

Fernando Torres restored parity, but there began the roller-coaster ride to full time as the lead changed no less than three times – an error-stricken Liverpool will only themselves to blame with Arshavin netting three more.

Yossi Benayoun rescued a point for the Merseysiders at the death, but ultimately their hopes of a maiden Premier League title were effectively vanquished, losing out to Manchester United by four points.

In the end, Arshavin’s spell in England was short-lived, but the much maligned winger will go down in English football folklore four delivering one of the best solo performances you are ever likely to see from a forward.
