Carl Valeri has been named Melbourne Victory captain for season 2015-16. The 31-year-old takes on the role from Mark Milligan, who moved to UAE club Baniyas earlier this year.

Valeri, who joined the club in June of last year, was a vital part of Victory’s successful 2014-15 campaign, which saw them claim both the premiership and the championship.

The midfielder featured in all 29 games last season, a feat which earned him the Players’ Player of the Year award at Victory’s annual medal night.

He described being selected as captain as a “not a job [but] a privilege”, while Victory chairman Anthony Di Pietro said he has “complete confidence that [Valeri] will lead the team by example both on and off the pitch”.

Valeri becomes the club’s fourth captain, joining the likes of Milligan, Adrian Leijer and current head coach Kevin Muscat.

The other highly touted captaincy candidate, Leigh Broxham, has been named as vice-captain.

The Victory’s next game sees them host Adelaide United in the FFA Cup quarter final to be played at AAMI Park on 22 September.
