Bourussia Dortmund defeated Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 at the Signal Iduna Park overnight to stay atop the Bundesliga ladder.

The home side controlled most aspects of the match to secure a rather comfortable victory, as goals from Jonas Hofmann, Shinji Kagawa and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang were enough to get Thomas Tuchel’s men over the line.

Dortmund are cooking without Reus

Borussia Dortmund cruised to victory without the contribution of their superstar Marco Reus, the winger left to witness a great victory from the bench. It was left to Henrikh Mkhitaryan to spark most of Dortmund’s play, emerging as the predominant attacking man for Thomas Tuchel’s side. The Armenian international may have fired most of his attempts off-target, but he was piling on pressure none the less.

The first goal for the home team came as a result of a counter-attack following a Leverkusen set piece. Kagawa produced an excellent ball which was terribly misjudged by goalkeeper Bernd Leno, who overran and allowed Hofmann a neat finish to give BVB the lead.

Although Kagawa had set up a vital opener for his side, he was not done yet. The Japan international was part of a great stint of play between Mkhitaryan and Ilkay Gundogan, all three combined well in a move that ended with Kagawa doubling Dortmund’s advantage.

The third came from the penalty spot when Leverkusen defender Wendell  brought Matthais Ginter down in the box and Aubameyang slotted the spot-kick home with ease, despite Leno diving the right way. The goal sealed the match and ensured top spot for Dortmund for at least another week.
