His situation improves day by day and now Joshua Brillante has Gianluca Festa’s confidence and a place on the Como starting XI.

The coach was impressed by the Australian’s 90 minute performance during their last Italian Serie B match against fourth placed Novara. The 1-1 scoreline was a good result for the team who are in desperate need of salvation. A battle to get away from last place still remains, but this latest showing will keep supporters a little bit hopeful.

His look and way of life caught the eye immediately in Italy and having gained experience with the liked of Fiorentina’s and Empoli’s, Brillante spoke exclusively with Outside90’s Stefano Fonsato about his new professional adventure in Como, Northern Italy, on the border with Switzerland.

Outside90: How would you define your Italian experiences so far? From Fiorentina to Como and passing by Empoli – are you satisfied?

Joshua Brillante: My Italian experience so far as been memorable, with both some ups and downs. From arriving in Italy until now the most difficult thing has been regular playing time, which was expected moving from Australia to Europe. But during this time I have learned many things on-and-off the field.

O90: How does your typical Italian day go?

JB: My typical italian day is training and then relaxing at home. I don’t like “movida” – I prefer to focus on my career life. It’s so important for me.

O90: What are the differences between Australia and Italy about football?

JB: Australian football is very different to Italian football. Italy is a lot more technical and tactical, which you would expect being in Europe and a well known country renowned for football.

O90: Have you ever been in Campobasso, the original place of birth (in Southern Italy) of your grandfather?

JB: I have never been to Campobasso, but yeah, it is still somewhere I need to go visit. I think I’ll do it soon.

O90: What are your targets for the future? Do you miss the national team? Do you want to represent the Socceroos again?

JB: My target for the future is to be playing regular football in one of the top leagues in the world, along with being back in the national team. Now things get better.

Do you remember the story about your utility car being among all the sporty ones of your teammates in Firenze?

(Laughing.) Yes I do remember that story. It was only my first couple months in Italy and was still looking to buy a new car, but it was funny looking at the car I was using parked with some of the other cars players had.
