A shock was sent through the Australian football landscape earlier today, with the announcement that 2015-16 would be Archie Thompson’s last in navy blue.

One of the A-League’s most recognisable faces, Thompson could play the final game of an 11-year career with the Melbourne Victory on Tuesday night.

Kevin Muscat’s men will face Gamba Osaka in the last match of the Asian Champions League group stage, with the Victorians needing a positive result to progress in the competition.

“We got a big game on Tuesday, it’s a massive opportunity for myself to leave the club on a high,” said Thompson.

“We’ve never gone through past the group stage in the ACL…after that I’ll reassess what I want to do and where I want to go, at the moment this is very fresh and I want to enjoy this.

“I don’t want it to finish on Tuesday, I want it to finish at hopefully at the end of May.”

Having reached nearly every possible target in the A-League with the Victory, the 37-year-old is not sure what lies in the road ahead, but wants fans to turn out in droves to help the team over their continental hurdle.

“I have such a good relationship with the supporters,” said Thompson.

“It’s always hard to say goodbye to something that’s been such a big part of your life for such a long time.

“I would like to just thank them so much for embracing me and making me feel as one of them, I’ve always said from day one they are the most important thing in any club.

“I just hope they get along on Tuesday and support the club.”
