Smeltz fails to score again

It has not been the most exciting start to Shane Smeltz’ season. After being given the main role up front for Sydney FC, the Kiwi international has struggled to make any sort of an impact and that was the case once more in the derby.

In the first-half both he and Federico Piovaccari struggled to come into the game whatsoever with a host of cheap turnovers in midfield starving the central-strikers. However, the Italian’s influence grew in the latter stages as he endeavoured to find a route to goal. A neat touch almost opened up the Sydney defence on the hour mark, but Matthew Jurman was alert to make a crucial block.

Smeltz, however, never looked likely to either create or grab what limited opportunities were presented to him and found himself substituted in the 73rd minute. Without a goal in his opening three matches, Sydney need to find a goalscoring solution and quick!
