A-League refereeing continues to be controversial

The Newcastle Jets opened the scoring just after the 70th minute mark, when a careless foul from Andreu gave full-back Lee Ki Je licence to test his free kick abilities just outside the box. The Korean’s free-kick clattered into the crossbar and rebounded into the path of Alivodic, who put the ball into the back of the net. However, a hasty reaction from the linesman deemed the ball offside and put the Jets celebrations on hold. Curiously, after some consultation referee Leigh Pigram incorrectly ruled the goal onside, much to the fury of the visiting side.

Only a few minutes later, the Wanderers were compensated for the referee’s error with Brendon Santalab winning a controversial penalty in the 80th minute. An inconspicuous push in the back from Serbian Trifunovic sent Santalab sprawling and drew the ire of the referee, giving Andreu the opportunity to coolly convert from the spot and level the score.

Wanderers record second consecutive win of the season

Although the Wanderers lost control of the midfield in large parts of the second half, the club managed to secure their second consecutive three points of the season. It’s clear that Popovic has again evolved his vision for the Wanderers, clearly favouring a possession based style facilitated by new Spanish signings Andreu, Dimas and Alberto. The question is whether the Wanderers can continue their momentum against Melbourne City next weekend, and if Piovaccari is ever likely to get on the scoresheet.
