Fitzgerald goes from hero to zero

The 23-year-old was his team’s best player in last week’s loss to Melbourne City, scoring once and getting into several good scoring positions. Shifted to left wing this weekend, Fitzgerald once again started the game well, contributing well in defence and making some dangerous runs at the Sydney FC defence. However, the young midfielder’s ill-discipline saw him sent off in the first half, receiving two yellow cards in two minutes. Fitzgerald received his first caution for talking back to referee Adam Fielding, before leading with a shoulder into an aerial challenge just moments later. Although this reaction came just moments after his side was denied what appeared to be a clear penalty, Fitzgerald acted beyond what was necessary and significantly affected his side’s chances of securing a win.

McGing shines for under-fire Mariners

Although the new all-attack philosophy has seen the Central Coast defence over-exposed at times, Jake McGing has been a bright light for Tony Walmsley at the back. The former Wanderers youth product only made his A-League debut in round one against Perth, but he has shown a level head under pressure and great positional sense. Time and time again McGing was in the right place to clear a cross or attempted through ball from the Sydney FC despite his team being outnumbered for the entire second half. McGing has also shown his capabilities on the ball, helping his team build up play from defence whether it be with short passes or more direct deliveries to the likes of Fabio Ferreira and Roy O’Donovan.

Outside90 Player of the Year Votes

It was a far from convincing performance from Sydney FC, with two-goal hero Matt Simon winning three votes for his decisive contribution off the bench. Alex Brosque showed great energy and creativity playing just behind the main striker to earn two votes and although he was on the losing side, Jake McGing impressed enough to secure the final vote.
