Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone says he has had a limited role to play in the stunning rise of star striker Antoine Griezmann.
Since moving to the Spanish capital from Real Sociedad back in 2014, the French international has developed himself into one of world football’s hottest properties.
The pair’s future at the club remains beyond doubt of the end of next season, after Simeone shortened his contract with the club.
“I don’t feel like Griezmann’s mentor, I’m just his coach who helps him as a footballer and as a person,” Simeone told reporters at a press conference.
“We’re helping an extraordinary footballer reach his full potential and I’m just like any other in achieving that.”
Atletico are preparing to host Bayern Munich in the Champions League, for the first time since eliminating the German giants from last season’s competition.
“Bayern are a very competitive team. The team is very similar to the one we played a short time ago,” Simeone added.
The match will kick off at 4:45am AEST Thursday morning.
