After celebrating their return to Europe’s highest stage for the first time in 20 years with a spectacular tifo, Legia Warsaw’s match against Borussia Dortmund took an unsightly turn.
Clashes broke out in the stands between the club’s fans and UEFA stewards, both of whom were armed with capsicum spray as well as other makeshift weapons, varying in size.
A portion of nearby home supporters hurrily fled the scene as the perpetrators appeared to withdraw.
The ugly scenes overshadowed the home fans’ incredible prematch display.
On the pitch, things did not go much better for Legia, humbled 6-0 by a rampant Dortmund side.
The Germans had six individual goalscorers, with recently returned Mario Gotze kicking off the flurry after seven minutes.
Legia boss Besnik Hasi said the match was over in 17 minutes, labelling his side’s performance as a “catastrophe”.
