Portland Timbers owner Merritt Paulson has weighed in on Wayne Rooney’s future, stating the Manchester United star would fine MLS “attractive”.

The Timbers owner has pointed to Rooney’s age, 30, as a major positive.

“I would argue he still has some good soccer ahead of him,” Paulson told the Mirror.

“I think he would be a great signing for MLS – 100 per cent MLS would be attractive for him.

“Keeping in mind that is a very talented footballer, who has quality soccer ahead of him, you are not talking about a 34- or 35-year-old.

“I get excited about the impact he would have in the MLS more than a guy who is coming in later in his career.”

The England captain has come under criticism in recent years for a perceived drop in form, with Manchester United going through a tough period after Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.

The MLS has become a suitable destination for ageing stars, with Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Kaka, Andrea Pirlo, Didier Drogba and David Villa accepting offers in recent years.

The profile of the United States’ premier football division is growing rapidly, and with the recent arrival of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and the emergence of starlets Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, Rooney’s future at the 20-time champions has been called into question.

The 30-year-old has won the Premier League title five times, as well as the FA Cup and European Cup once each.
