League leaders Leicester City play host to Manchester United on Sunday morning in a top-of-the-table clash.

Many would not have predicted Leicester to be sitting atop of the standings after 13 games, but they have been irresistible so far this season. The Foxes have done so with an abundance of goals and a fearless attitude – making them one of the best watches to date.

Manchester United have had their critics in the opening stages of the season, particularly surrounding their style of play. By contrast, United have scored only 19 goals, at times going on considerable goalless runs in all competitions. United’s success, however, has been built on a solid defence, having conceded only nine goals – the best in the league.

A win for either side would see them sit top of the table following the conclusion of this week’s fixtures.

Key Battle – Chris Smalling vs Jamie Vardy

Indicative of their respective sides’ strengths, both Chris Smalling and Jamie Vardy have been important figures for their clubs this season.

Smalling has been one of the most improved players in the Premier League this season, thriving under Louis van Gaal’s style of play. He has been a key figure in the Red Devils’ strong defensive foundations. Although seemingly an unassuming character, Smalling has also displayed his apparent leadership qualities, often the general in setting up United’s shape without the ball.

Vardy has been one of the most talked about figures so far this season. A true fairytale story, Vardy is on a run of 10 consecutive games in which he has scored, currently leading the Golden Boot race. If Vardy scores this game, he will fittingly break former United hitman Ruud van Nistelrooy’s record of consecutive games scored.

Team News

Aside from Matthew James and his ACL injury, Claudio Ranieri will have a full complement of players to choose from.

Competition for places is fierce currently, and Leonardo Ulloa has put his hand up for another start following his goal last week. Shinji Okazaki also hit the scoresheet when he came off the bench against Newcastle.

Leicester City Expected XI (4-4-2): Schmeichel (GK); Simpson, Huth, Morgan, Fuchs; Mahrez, Drinkwater, Kante, Albrighton; Ulloa, Vardy.

There are still doubts over whether Michael Carrick will be available due to an ankle injury. He is one of a long list of injuries for the Red Devils, which includes Ander Herrera, Antonio Valencia, Phil Jones, Luke Shaw and James Wilson.

In a positive for United, Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney returned midweek in the Champions League against PSV.

Manchester United Expected XI (4-2-3-1) De Gea (GK); Darmian, Smalling, Blind, Young; Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger; Depay, Mata, Rooney; Martial.

Head-to-Head

Leicester City and Manchester United have met on 82 previous occasions, with Leicester winning 22, United 40 and 20 draws.

Previous Meeting

United were convincing winners in the previous encounter between the two sides, running out 3-1 winners at home, having sewn up the contest early, scoring three first half goals.

Prediction

The game will largely hinge on whether the Foxes can capitalise on any opportunities they may be presented, as they will not see much of the football throughout. Expect a close contest between two sides in form, finishing in a toughly fought draw.
