Sunderland’s woes continue

Sunderland’s poor start to the campaign has continued and they are still winless after seven games. Their confidence is seemingly gone and, against Manchester United, they displayed a lack of desire and ambition. They allowed United to have the ball and it is difficult to recall De Gea having to make too many saves on the day. The intensity was lacking and it was almost as if they had the mentality of a training run. The defence continues to leak goals and the attack has been extremely blunt. The omens look bad for Dick Advocaat and this team is destined for yet another relegation brawl.

Chelsea in a rut

For all who thought Chelsea were back in form after their three consecutive wins, their 2-2 draw with Newcastle showed something quite different. The Blues seem to routinely struggle against the Magpies regardless of their form and the men from Tyneside always appear to raise their game for the visit of Chelsea. Jose Mourinho’s team’s first half performance was symbolic of a newly promoted team. They displayed meekness, lethargy and were dominated by Newcastle. Despite an improved second half display, one felt there was no way back for the champions after Georginio Wijnaldum doubled the hosts’ money. Thanks to Ramires’ strike and Willian’s free kick, Chelsea resurrected a point, but the performance was still below par. With just eight points in seven games, Mourinho must seriously ask questions of his team and himself.
