Liverpool secure much needed win

Brendan Rodgers’ team has finally overcame its blip which saw it on a winless run of four games. It was far from easy, however. After going 2-0 up, Rudy Gestede scored two goals either side of Daniel Sturridge’s second goal to put pressure on the hosts. It was a sight for sore eyes seeing Sturridge in full flow again and although not yet as his best, there was a sharpness to his game reminiscent of the days when he, Luis Suarez and Raheem Sterling were the most exhilarating front three in the Premier League. Can Rodgers integrate Sturridge and Christian Benteke in a team together and make it a success?

Christian Benteke a distant memory for Villa

When it was confirmed that Benteke was leaving Aston Villa for Liverpool, there was a certain irony about it. It is fair to say that although Villa have regularly finished below the Merseysiders in recent seasons, they have always had the edge whenever the sides have met. In fact, Benteke has scored five times against the Reds and when one considers he joined Villa in the 2012-13 season, the feat is all the more impressive. But Benteke’s replacement, Gestede, is making Villa forget all about the Belgian. Gestede demonstrated his power and athleticism, scoring a brace in his first game against Liverpool, just like Benteke did three years ago. The Frenchman looks to be a shrewd signing.
