Basel continue to strengthen

League leaders Basel hosted St Gallen at a close to packed St Jakob Park, going ahead just after 10 minutes when a cross found Birkir Bjarnason on the left wing, then deciding to run the ball into the penalty area where he was brought down by a late challenge. The penalty was awarded despite a protest from the visitors..

Captain Matias Delgado struck the spot kick to the left-hand side of the net, while the goalkeeper seemed rooted in place.

It took until the 82nd minute to double the advantage, Luca Zuffi’s free-kick, directed towards the penalty area, where Marc Janko got the defining touch to make it 2-0.

St Gallen pulled one back through a long-range strike from Marco Aratore, ending-up in the top corner and leaving the goalkeeper no chance, yet there was not enough time remaining to rescue any meaningful reward.

The result means that Basel has comfortably secured first place on the table.
