Impressive Southampton give United trouble

Most teams this season have tried to attack United’s central-defence through the air this season. Few teams have had more success than Southampton. The Saints made life uncomfortable for United’s defence with quality balls in from wide areas.

With Luke Shaw out for the season following a gruesome injury in the Champions League midweek, Marcos Rojo was called on to fill in at left-back. The Argentine defender struggled to have the same impact as Shaw both going forward and in defence. After previously excelling for United so far this season, Matteo Darmian was withdrawn at half time as he struggled to contend with Southampton’s movement and crossing.

Graziano Pelle was on the scoresheet for the Saints.

Tadic, Pelle and Mane were a constant headache for United’s defence that had by and large handled most of what opposing sides had thrown at them this season. Southampton may have come away empty-handed but did enough to show that they should once again be in consideration for the Europa League places.
