Martial’s star continues to rise

The beginning of Martial’s Premier League career is scarcely believable. The teenage striker announced himself to the Old Trafford faithful with a wonderful solo goal to put the icing on United’s 3-1 win over arch-rivals Liverpool.

He followed up that effort with a two-goal display, delivering United a crucial three points on the road. After Pelle had put Southampton ahead, Martial levelled the scoring after 34 minutes. Juan Mata was perhaps lucky not to be flagged for offside after a poor Southampton clearance was returned with interest. The ball fell to Martial, who showed experience beyond his years in calmly leveling the scores.

His second was almost a carbon-copy of Robin van Persie’s effort at St Mary’s last season. This time around it was the young Frenchman who was gifted the ball following a horrendous back-pass by Maya Yoshida. Martial kept his cool to finish past a hapless Stekelenburg. United made it 3-1 when Juan Mata put away the rebound after Memphis Depay was denied by the post following an impressive 45-pass move that would have been sure to delight manager Louis van Gaal.

Martial was always going to have his work cut out justifying his enormous price tag but with three goals in his first two Premier League games, his Old Trafford career could scarcely have started better.
