Manchester City escaped a scare when they travelled to Germany to take on Borussia Monchengladbach in what proved to be an enthralling fixture on Wednesday evening.

After losing their opening game to Juventus, the Citizens desperately needed a win to kick-start their European campaign and did so but not without a shaky first half performance. The English side came from a goal down to snatch the victory by two goals to one.

Borussia Monchengladbach

Yann Sommer – 7: Made some excellent saves throughout the game. A shaky defence in front of him made his performance even more noteworthy.

Julian Korb – 7: Assisted his side’s only goal but struggled in his defensive duties.

Andreas Christensen – 6: The Chelsea loanee proved he has a lot to learn but still managed a decent performance especially in the first half.

Alvaro Dominguez – 6: The Spaniard was steady at the back alongside Christensen but not imposing enough to help his side from suffering defeat.

Oscar Wendt – 5: The weakest link in his team’s defence. Did not get forward as much as he would have liked and made mistakes on more than one occasion.

Patrick Herrmann – 7: Was a shining light whenever his side came forward, making some vital passes in the final third.

Mahmoud Dahoud – 6: The 19-year-old made life miserable for Yaya Toure by not giving him any time on the ball. Had a decent outing otherwise.

Granit Xhaka – 7: The Swiss international was solid in the midfield and did not shirk his defensive duties.

Fabian Johnson – 5: The USA international has enjoyed better days and was responsible for giving away the late penalty that decided the game.

Lars Stindl – 7: Scored the opener after passing it into the back of the net past Joe Hart. Bossed the midfield in the first half in his playmaker role.

Raffael – 8: Will be disappointed to not convert his penalty but the Brazillian was Monchengladbach’s main threat in attack.
