New York Red Bulls take control of the Supporters Shield race
The condensed MLS Matchday Week 32 saw the New York Red Bulls claim a key 2-1 victory in a controversial match against the Montreal Impact.
It was a contest that saw three penalties awarded, but only two converted. The Red Bulls benefited from a misjudged moment of madness with their former defender Ambroise Oyongo acrobatically clearing off the line, leaving his former employers to play against 10 men for the remaining 75 minutes.
Sacha Kljestan’s well taken penalty put his side in front. Despite his failure to convert a second spot kick (due in part to some mind games by Didier Drogba), the Red Bulls Lloyd Sam would double their advantage and ensure the crucial three points would stay in New York, even after Drogba’s late penalty ensured a tenser than expected finish.
The win leaves the Red Bulls firmly in the driving seat to take the Eastern Conference championship, as well as the Supporters Shield. The club’s recent success is a far cry from the early season furore that saw it enveloped in a bitter dispute with the fans after the surprise sacking of then manager and club legend Mike Petke.Jesse Marsch (and indeed the Red Bull management as a whole) deserving huge credit for bringing together a side with sufficient depth and quality to realistically challenge on all fronts.
