Drogba’s “Perfect 9” just the tonic for Montreal

In one of the renowned quirks of the unpredictable MLS scheduling, Matchday 32 paid witness to two Montreal Impact games. The second of which, a crucial 0-1 victory over the Colorado Rapids, all but ensured play-off qualification.

Didier Drogba’s superb free kick was the only flash of brilliance in an otherwise tepid contest that saw the Rapids dominate but with very little for show for it.

Drogba’s “Impact” since arriving in Montreal has far exceeded even the loftiest of expectations. The ageing Ivory Coast forward has found the back of the net 9 times in just 9 games. This astonishing statistic puts Drogba 7th in the franchise’s all-time MLS scoring history.

The win, soured by a serious injury to Argentine midfielder Andres Romero, helped snap a two game losing streak. But perhaps most crucially ensured Montreal remain 4 points above their playoff competitors with only two games remaining.

Barring a late capitulation (not unheard of in particular with the Canadian franchise) Drogba’s late season fairytale looks set to be tested in the more demanding MLS post-season playoffs.
