Brendan Rodgers’ Anfield tenure is hanging by a thread after a Liverpool edged their way past League Two Carlisle United on penalties.
After fielding a strong starting XI any Liverpool fan would have hoped for a comfortable victory, and much-needed confidence to kick start their faltering campaign – they got anything but.
Danny Ings opened the scoring for the home side with a close-range header midway through the first half, but the underdogs struck back through Derek Asamoah to level 1-1 at half-time.

It was the fourth successive occasion that Liverpool were taken to extra-time at Anfield in the League Cup against lower league opposition. To make matters even worse Carlisle have conceded the most goals in League Two thus far this season. Despite Liverpool’s onslaught they never found a clinical edge in front of goal.

Boos at full time. Fans leaving the ground. More boos at half time in extra time. Players look clueless & disjointed – have done for months — Jay (@Jay82_LFC) September 23, 2015

Their league form is woeful, seeing the Reds placed 13th on the table with just eight points from their opening six matches.
As the 6,000 strong Carlisle travelling support sang ‘You’re getting sacked in the morning’, it truly does feel inevitable that the Northern Irishman is on his last legs.
Hosting Aston Villa at the weekend, could this be the manager’s final act as Liverpool boss?
