Three key talking points – Adelaide United vs Newcastle Jets

Guillermo Amor is under pressure as winless Adelaide host Newcastle Jets.

Can Adelaide continue scoring?

After weeks of floundering up front, Adelaide have netted two goals in both of their last two clashes. However, after building what points they have off of resilient defence, scoring seems to have come at a cost, with the Reds conceding a whopping eight goals in that same period. With almost a third of the season gone and still without a win, it will be crucial Adelaide continue to approach the match with the same attacking mindset that saw them score against Wellington in the opening minutes. The question will be this: can they find any balance? Or will their defence again be made to pay?

Milos Trifunovic and Scott Miller

Despite being Newcastle’s top goal scorer this season and bagging the opening goal in the F3 Derby last weekend, Jets import Milos Trifunovic was unable to escape the wrath of Scott Miller. In fact, the Serbian forward was the main target of a post-match rant from the Newcastle gaffer after their worst performance of the season in round six. Given the seemingly harsh evaluation of Trifunovic’s performance, it will be interesting to see how the forward responds when he takes to the field at Coopers Stadium, and what Miller has to say should he fail to get on the score sheet.

Marcelo Carrusca’s underwhelming performances

Marcelo Carrusca has been one of Adelaide’s star performers since joining the club under John Kosmina back in 2012. But since the introduction of Guillermo Amor as head coach, the Argentine has been hugely disappointing – failing to adjust to his new role and lacking any enthusiasm – seeing him benched by Amor against Wellington last round. And while he is not the only squad member lagging under the former Barcelona player, his performances and attitude have been vital to United’s previous three seasons, making his poor form now all the more crucial. With Adelaide starting to show signs of life over the past two weekends, will we see a return of the ‘old Carrusca’, or is the midfielder’s time in South Australia coming to an end?
