Song’s first start of the season.
In spite of his fading in the second half of last season, Alex Song was still very much a sought after man for the Hammers in this latest off season. Resigned, again on loan from Barcelona, he has been injured until only a few weeks ago, and here made his first start of the season. He quickly went to work, providing that mostly becalming, sometimes lackadaisical, presence in midfield. He is very good at negotiating space, and has the ability to split a defence with a crisp pass. With Victor Moses, and later Michail Antonio, looking to operate almost exclusively on the break, Song’s passing ability helped this become a genuine threat. His positioning was mostly apt, his tackling became more ubiquitous as the match went on, and when he was substituted, he jogged off without a booking, something of a rarity against these opponents. All in all, a job very well done.
