Newcastle United

Rob Elliot – 8.5: Made a number of fine saves that kept Newcastle in with a chance. Tipped a superb strike by Barkley onto the crossbar brilliantly and stopped a certain own goal. Nothing he could do about any of the goals.

Daryl Janmaat – 4.5: Made a couple of good runs but with little end product.

Chancel Mbemba – 5.5: Made a desperate block in the 41st minute to deny Lennon a second. Forced off with injury after the aforementioned play and was replaced by Jamaal Lascelles. Proved to be a big loss.

Frabricio Coloccini – 6: Was alert at the back and swept up most of what came his way. Needed to be solid and was, but let his guard down for moment and allowed Barkley to fire an excellent long-range effort. Was bailed out by his goalkeeper on that occasion.

Paul Dummett – 3: Not a great night for the left-back. Will want to forget taking a tumble on the left-touchline when readying a cross, and quickly. Subbed off at half time.

Henri Saivet – 5: Tried to force the issue in midfield before being replaced by Mitrovic.

Jonjo Shelvey – 5.5: Grew into the game the more his side did after the interval. Committed some sloppy errors and so nearly conceded an own goal had it not been for Elliot. Booked on the hour.

Moussa Sissoko – 3.5: Very quiet, only offered glimpses.

Andros Townsend – 5.5: Started the game strongly but faded.

Georginio Wijnaldum – 3: Anonymous.

Ayoze Perez – 3.5: Fortunate to escape any kind of punishment for a poor challenge on Jagielka. Cut an isolated figure up front.

Substitutes

Rolando Aarons – 3: The youngster was caught spectating on a few occasions and showed his inexperience by giving away a sloppy penalty. Offered more going forward than Dummett.

Aleksandr Mitrovic – 3: Squandered a guilt-edged opportunity with 25 minutes left. Should have buried it.

Jamaal Lascelles – 2: Made a calamitous error late on, allowing Barkley in. Brought him down in the box and was sent off as the last man.
