Newcastle hit for Norwich for six

After the ninth attempt, Newcastle United have finally secured their first win of the campaign. Despite what the 6-2 scoreline may depict, it was no stroll and Norwich gave a stern evaluation of the Magpies in this one. Despite the defence still looking poor and allowing Norwich a path back into the game at 3-2, this was Newcastle’s best attacking performance to date – clinical and ruthless in the final-third. Georginio Wijnaldum and Moussa Sissoko were powerful and dynamic in attack, combining up well with Ayoze Perez and Aleksander Mitrovic. Wijnaldum in particular has proven himself in the Premier League and his four goals here were all superbly taken. With rivals Sunderland next week, a team who they have had a poor record against recently, there is an opportunity to push on out of the danger zone.

Swansea fading away

After their quietly impressive start to the Premier League, Swansea City are fading away. Monday’s 1-0 defeat has continued a worrying slide that they cannot seem to arrest. In their last five games just two points have been secured and mid-table is now where they find themselves, with boss Garry Monk now facing the most difficult challenge of his short managerial career. It is hard to establish the reasons behind this slump and this must be a worry. To build on that eighth place finish, results must turn around now before its too late and mid-table mediocrity becomes a formality. Monk’s test is to come up with a convincing reason why his squad are failing on nearly every front and fix it.
