It was a Champions League reunion six years in the making, and from it came two telling performances from both Wolfsburg and their Russian opponent CSKA Moscow. A 1-0 win for the home side was an unflattering final scoreline in what was a dominant display from the Germans, who pushed away suggestions that without departed star Kevin De Bruyne they might struggle in Europe’s premier competition. It was fitting that Julian Draxler, the man brought in to fill De Bruyne’s place, would be the one to do the damage just before half time.

Not even the introduction of Seydou Doumbia could provide any spark to CSKA’s attacking display and, if not for Igor Akinfeev, the Moscow club’s defenders would have been responsible for a much more damaging scoreline.
