Lawrence Thomas (Melbourne Victory)

Widely considered deadweight by many a Victory fan, Lawrence Thomas looked to be on his last chance in Melbourne – out of favour and out of contract.

A number two since signing for the club in 2011, Thomas played second fiddle to Ante Covic and most recently Nathan Coe, who last season looked to have the starting berth sewn up heading into the finals.

However, Coe was to suffer an unfortunate, crippling back injury that opened the door for the 23-year-old. Any nerves about Thomas’ inclusion would be short-lived, however.

The ex-Sheffield United man discovered his best form in the finals series, making a series of saves as Victory came under pressure, notably off a tricky effort from Alex Brosque in the grand final approaching half time.

Thomas’ efforts were rewarded with a new deal. Good headaches confront manager Kevin Muscat this season, who will be presented with the option of Thomas or new signing Danny Vukovic between the posts.
