Filippo Inzaghi – 370 Serie A Matches

(Piacenza, AlbinoLeffe, Hellas Verona, Parma, Atalanta, Juventus, AC Milan)

He was a man that divided opinions throughout his entire career, from Johan Cruyff stating, “(he) can’t actually play football at all” to Carlo Ancelotti contending that, “no great team should be without this kind of killer striker”. Whichever side of the fence one takes when it comes to ‘Super Pippo’, one thing cannot be denied: he scored goals.

Inzaghi was a player whose entire game relied upon his nigh-on animalistic instinct for goal. A lanky, seemingly weak centre-forward who always managed to get the better of his often technically better, and almost always physically stronger centre-halves by being in the right place at the right time, every time.

He still holds the record for most Serie A hat-tricks, 70 goals in European competitions with a World Cup, three Serie A titles and two UEFA Champions leagues to boot, it is not difficult to justify Inzaghi’s label as one of football’s greatest ever centre forwards.

Why he never left: “I guess the fact I’ve never played for a foreign club could explain (his lack of plaudits)… or maybe it’s because the Italians are gourmets, and they know how to appreciate good football!” (2008)
