Paolo Maldini – 647 Serie A Matches

(AC Milan)

The ultimate one-club man. With his father and his children all representing Milan at some level, black and red was, and always will be, passing through the veins of the defender.

Not overly strong, fast, or even technically exceptional, it was Maldini’s incredible positioning that resulted in him being the heart of one of the most efficient and leak-proof defences in football history, as he averaged just over one tackle every two games. Quite incredible considering the physical nature of ’90s football that he made his own.

Boasting an immense seven Serie A titles, five UEFA Cups and five Champions League/European Cups, one would be hard pressed to find a more decorated defender in football history.

Arguably even more impressive than his team honours with Milan is his partnership with Franco Baresi. The pair started 196 matches together, shipping a mere 23 goals.

Why he never left: “I feel very honoured to have been associated with Milan for so long and to be seen by outsiders as the symbol of the club…This is very important in football because fans need to identify with a player who starts in the youth team and grows with the team, stays with them.” (2003)
