A Gonzalo Higuaín double extended Napoli’s unbeaten run in the league to 13 games and ensured the home side eclipsed their opponents to reach top spot in the Serie A standings.

Napoli have defeated 10-man Inter Milan 2-1 in a thrilling encounter at the Stadio San Paolo on Monday night, with two goals from the brilliant Higuaín all that was required to ward off Roberto Mancini’s side.

Former Real Madrid man Higuaín got the Partenopei off to a flying start with a well taken goal inside the opening two minutes of the match, before Inter full-back Yuto Nagatomo received his second yellow card of the game on the brink of half time, needlessly bringing down tireless midfielder Allan.

Early in the second half, Argentine striker Higuaín got his second of the match as he drifted between Inter’s two centre-backs and hit a well placed finish into the corner, however, the Nerazzurri responded through livewire Adem Ljajic, kickstarting the away side’s revival with a well taken goal of his own.

It was Pepe Reina, though, who turned out to be Napoli’s saviour late in the game, acrobatically tipping a João Miranda header onto the post in the final seconds of stoppage time, with Stevan Jovetic having a header of his own rebound off the post just moments before that, consigning the Nerazzurri to their second loss of the season.
