A largely uninspiring contest at Hunter Stadium was decided late on by front man Alex Brosque, stealing three points for Sydney FC.
The Sydney skipper was quiet for long periods in a contest that never really got going, but he was on hand for the crucial moment.
He flicked in a superb header from a corner just as the match looked like it was headed for a draw. It was cruel on Ben Kennedy in goal for the Jets, who had come on earlier in the match after Mark Birighitti received a blow to the face from Shane Smeltz.
Sydney was worth their win as they dominated possession for large periods of the match but it was a cruel way for the home side to lose the match, considering how undermanned they were at the back. They also had a header in the first half ruled out for offside, but it appeared that the assistant got the decision wrong and Jason Hoffman’s effort should have stood.
