EPL – How Crystal Palace fared in the January transfer window

Our series of January transfer window wrap-ups continues with a look at the business done by Alan Pardew’s Crystal Palace.

Who arrived?

Crystal Palace have only brought in two players in this transfer window and given the money spent in the last window this is really no surprise.

They have brought in Emmanuel Adebayor, an unattached player, who has shown that he has Premier League quality in 230 previous EPL appearances split between Arsenal (104), Manchester City (34) and Tottenham (92) scoring 96 goals. This is something that Palace need because they have struggled up front so far this season with only one goal coming from a striker in Connor Wickham and that only came through a penalty so Palace fans will be hoping that theTogolese striker will rectify that issue quickly.

The Eagles have also signed Randall Williams on a short term deal until the end of the season. The 19-year-old has been on trial from non-league side Tower Hamlets and his six month contract has an extension option if he impresses. Coach Alan Pardew has been impressed with the willingness of Williams to take on the opposition and his quick feet which will fit in well with the way that Pardew sets his team up in looking to hit teams on the counter.

Who departed?

Palace have lost the service Jack Hunt who has moved to Championship side Sheffield Wednesday on a three and a half year deal. The full-back has been on loan at the Owls since the start of the season after never really getting a go at Palace. He didn’t play in a competitive game for the Eagles joining from Huddersfield Town in September 2013.

After being recalled from a loan deal with Nottingham Forest earlier in the window Jonny Williams has been signed by MK Dons on a 93 day emergency loan. The 22-year-old Welsh international has played 69 times for Crystal Palace and was instrumental to the side’s promotion in the 2012-13 season.

In another loan move, Eagles youngster Jerome Binnom-Willams has joined Leyton Orient until the end of the season. The left-back had made two first team appearances in the Capital One Cup ties against Bristol City and Walsall over the past couple of seasons.

Who can help the team?

Palace were in the running to sign Charlie Austin before Southampton swooped in. He would have been a great signing for the club given their failings in front of goals with strikers. In his season in the Premier League he scored 19 goals in 35 appearances in a side that had a very difficult season and ended up being relegated. The other thing that would have made Austin a better signing than Adebayor is his age. He is only 26 compared with Adebayor who is 31. The Togolese striker also carries some baggage after his time with Tottenham.

Overall Rating

Based on what the side needed it has been a positive window. Given that Palace had failed to score in the last six games, barring their goal against Tottenham which was an own goal scored by Jan Vertonghen, the frustrated Palace supporters will be hoping that Adebayor comes with the form that he had at his time at Arsenal rather the form that saw him leave Tottenham on difficult terms. Pardew will also be hoping that the signing of Randall Williams goes better than the last young loanee Patrick Bamford who never really found his feet at the club despite previously showing that there was some potential.
