Dead men walking as NYCFC threaten a last gasp ressurection

New York City FC went a long way in proving the old adage of what a difference a week can make in the world of football. As two crucial wins, the latest coming over the San Jose Earthquakes, have resurrected their slim chances of making the playoffs in their inaugural campaign.

The 3-2 victory on Sunday owed much to (a Ned Grabavoy double aside) an improved performance from the side’s big money Designated Players, with Frank Lampard having a hand in the first two goals and the returning David Villa scoring third.

The Earthquakes, on the other hand, who rallied from 3-0 down to come within a goal of NYFC, have surprisingly faltered when they looked set to make a late surge in the Western Conference.

Both are fine examples of the perennially unpredictable nature of MLS as a whole.
