Hull City caretaker coach Mike Phelan has revealed former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson wanted to bring Zlatan Ibrahimović to the club during his managerial career.

The former United number two will this weekend have to face the superstar that is Zlatan, trying to stop him from scoring in a fourth consecutive game.

“There has to be moment in a career span like Sir Alex Ferguson had that there were moments when you come across and think about such star players as Zlatan Ibrahimović,” Phelan told the Manchester Evening News.

“The size of Manchester United means you want to recruit the very best. It demands it. He had to be a target.

“I am sure he was on the radar many times. But he was at top, top clubs and because of that, even though it was Manchester United, the prospect of him moving to the Premier League was always very slim because he was at the best anyway.”

“He would have been on the radar but they can be on your radar but you cannot always get them. The best is at the best so it is very difficult to do deals.”

If the recently retired Swedish international does in fact score, he will become the first player since 1925 to score in their first four appearances for the Red Devils.
