Manchester United midfielder, Juan Mata is reportedly set to stay with the club following a meeting with manager, Jose Mourinho over his future at Old Trafford.

The Spaniard was expected to leave the Red Devils in the Summer transfer window after the ‘Special One’s’ arrival, having previously fallen out of favour with Mourinho during their time at Chelsea.

However, reports today suggest Mata is set to stay put despite being told by the Portuguese manager that he will likely use Borussia Dortmund recruit, Henrikh Mkhitaryan in Mata’s preferred right-midfielder position.

Perhaps surprisingly, Mata has started in United’s first two wins of the season against Bournemouth and Southampton under Mourinho.

Mourinho is a strong believer in his wider players dropping back to help in defence, something he has criticised the 27-year-old for in the past and, ironically, led to his transfer to Manchester United in 2014.

The meeting could signal a change in relationship between the two, with Mourinho reportedly telling Mata that his future does lie with the club.

Mata had been strongly linked with a move to Everton, however the Toffees now appear unlikely to snare the Spanish international who will have his position at United re-assessed in the January transfer window.

Mata is hoping to retain his starting spot for this weekend’s clash with Hull City at the KC Stadium.
