A Guatemalan court has sentenced a football fan to 15 years’ imprisonment following the death of a rival fan back in 2014.

Francisco Pirir was convicted and found guilty of helping stab and beat to death Kevin Diaz at a match between rivals Club Municipal and Club Comunicaciones.

Pirir said he acted on calls made by a local radio personality just days before the clash.

Marlon Puente, also known as “Pirulo”, called on fans of Club Municipal to attacks fans of their opposition on matchday.

“I did what Pirulo said”, exclaimed Municipal supporter Pirir during the court proceedings.

Radio commentator Puente was also sentenced for his involvement in the lead-up to the deadly attacks.

He was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for instigating a crime, but only served two months behind bars before he was ordered to pay a fine for his actions.

Municipal and Comunicaciones are considered the two biggest and most influential clubs in Guatemalan football, with the fixture between the pair being known as El Clasico Chapin.

In the last five games between the pair both sides have won twice, with a 2-1 win to Municipal the latest result back in May.
